FORT KENT — A New Jersey paddler who completed a 740-mile solo kayaking trip from upstate New York to Maine says she’ll never forget the moments of “incredible beauty, solitude and serenity.”
Cathy Mumford of Colts Neck, N.J., became the first woman to complete the trip without assistance when she arrived today in Fort Kent.
Mumford began paddling June 19 in Old Forge, N.Y., and crossed Vermont, southern Quebec and New Hampshire before completing the trip.
She says that on her worst day she paddled two miles before giving up because of strong headwinds. But on her best day she managed to paddle 30 miles.
