BRUNSWICK — The agency in charge of redeveloping Brunswick Naval Air Station has won a major victory with a decision to keep a state-of-the-art instrument landing system in place.
The Navy had considered moving the $1.5 million system to a base in Texas.
Arthur Mayo, chairman of the trustees for the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, says the landing system is a “key component” of a proposed civilian airport on the site.
The instrument landing system allows larger aircraft to take off and land in all weather conditions, something that’s vital to efforts to utilize the twin runways down the road. Redevelopers envision the airfield serving local pilots as well as airplane manufacturers and aircraft repair firms.
