CROSS COUNTRY: Bruce Bickford has been named head coach of the women’s and men’s cross country teams at St. Joseph’s College.

Bickford spent the last three years coaching at Cheverus High.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Free-agent point guard Earl Boykins signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Agent Mark Termini said the 5-foot-5 Boykins, an 11-year veteran, had offers from other teams but was comfortable with Milwaukee, one of nine teams he has played for previously. Boykins has career averages of 9.3 points and 3.4 assists per game.

The NBA fined Rudy Fernandez of the Portland Trail Blazers $25,000 for public statements “detrimental” to the league. Agent Andy Miller told several media outlets Fernandez wants to play in Europe and is willing to sit out for the next two seasons, the time left on his contract with Portland.

WNBA: Nicole Powell scored 20 points, Cappie Pondexter had 16 and the New York Liberty beat the visiting Tulsa Shock 95-85 for their 10th straight victory.

Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 15 points to help New York pull into a tie with Indiana for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Shanna Crossley scored 21 points for the Shock.
