ROAD RUNNING
ETHIOPIAN B2B RUNNER DIES: Dejene Berhanu, who finished among the top 15 in each of the past three Beach to Beacon 10K Road Races, died Sunday in Ethiopia at the age of 29.
An official cause of death has not been been released.
Berhanu, who underwent successful eye surgery in Maine by a team of local physicians after the 2009 race, leaves behind a wife and 3-year-old daughter.
“We’re crushed,” said Dr. Jeff Berman, the Cape Elizabeth ophthalmologist who hosted Berhanu on each of his three visits to Maine, and diagnosed the droopy eyelid and arranged to correct it as well. “It’s like a member of our family died. What a tragedy.”
