SOUTH PORTLAND – South Portland police collaborated with Westbrook police to arrest a man who faces drug charges in connection with bogus prescriptions.

Vincent M. Varanelli, 19, of South Portland was arrested Tuesday night and charged with unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, acquiring drugs by deception, forgery, and theft by receipt of stolen property.

Westbrook police Lt. Mike Nugent said Varanelli’s arrest stemmed from an investigation in Westbrook, where a doctor reported that someone had stolen prescription pads from his office.

Varanelli allegedly passed prescriptions written on those stolen pads at several pharmacies, including one for 180 tablets of oxycodone.

Varanelli was being held in the Cumberland County Jail on $1,500 cash bail.

Nugent said he expects more arrests to be made as the investigation progresses.
