BANGOR — A Bangor psychiatric hospital will no longer provide free methadone treatment to uninsured people addicted to opiate drugs such as heroin.

The Bangor Daily News says about 100 of the 550 people in The Acadia Hospital’s methadone program were receiving free care.

About 70 of those people will pay the $72 weekly cost of methadone treatment.

Acadia Hospital’s Brent Scobie says others will move into a program designed to end their need for methadone.

He says the program draws heavily on the 12-step model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous, and emphasizes peer support and professional counseling.
