About $10,000 has been pledged so far in an effort to raise $75,000 to honor Maine women veterans.

The money will be used to cover the cost of a $24,000 memorial plaque at the State House Hall of Flags and the distribution of special silver coins to each of Maine’s estimated 10,000 women veterans. “We have a long way to go,” said Rep. Linda Valentino, D-Saco.

Valentino sponsored the resolve passed by the Maine Legislature this year to create the plaque. She co-chairs the plaque fundraising committee, which is working to raise the money in time for the plaque to be dedicated on Veterans Day in November.

The committee is also trying to identify all of Maine’s women veterans so they can be honored.

The plaque was designed by sculptor Gary Cooper of Fayette.

It depicts Maine women who have served in the military during four centuries.

Information on how to contribute to the plaque fund is available by calling the Bureau of Veterans’ Services at 626-4464 or online at http://tinyurl.com/3yxrxuh.

Donations may be made by check, made out to Treasurer, State of Maine, and mailed to the Bureau of Veterans’ Services, 117 State House Station, Augusta 04333-0177.
