PORTLAND — The Maine Council of Churches, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, Maine Conference of the United Church of Christ and Episcopal Diocese of Maine are condemning a Florida church’s plan to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11.

Joined by the Center for Preventing Hate, the churches issued a statement today deploring “the recent rise in anti-Muslim discrimination, intimidation and violence.”

They said the planned burning of the Quran is “contrary to both the Christian gospel and the values of religious freedom and tolerance on which our nation was founded.”

Others condemning the event include President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, has said it could lead to attacks on international troops.
