WOOLWICH — A Dresden man was flown to a Lewiston hospital after crashing his motorcycle on River Road Sunday.

Erik Shirrmacher, 34, was in critical condition Monday at Central Maine Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Shirrmacher was taken to the hospital by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter after crashing his motorcycle around 5 p.m., Sunday, Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said in a release.

Shirrmacher was driving his motorcycle north on River Road when he lost control of the bike on a corner and crashed.

“He was not wearing a helmet,” Merry said.

Speed and alcohol appear to have played a role in the crash, which is still under investigation by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department.

Woolwich firefighters and emergency medical services responded to the crash. The Bath Police Department reconstructed the accident, Merry said.
