AUGUSTA — Maine’s congressional delegation plans to speak at a hearing in Washington that’s of interest to the state’s paper workers.
Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins along with Democratic Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree are on the witness list to testify before the International Trade Commission on a petition by American paper manufacturers and their workers against Chinese and Indonesian subsidized imports.
The petitioners say those imports of coated paper have materially injured America’s paper industry. Snowe says her testimony will underscore effects those practices have on production, prices and jobs in the United States.
Michaud says U.S. manufacturers can’t compete in a market that’s flooded with cheap imports from China and Indonesia.
