READFIELD – The Maranacook boys’ soccer team took the field without its best offensive player and two other seniors who play significant roles.

The Black Bears planned accordingly.

With Dakota Duplissie, who has 15 goals in five games, Jon Findlay and Greg Goucher all out with injuries against a Camden Hills team that hadn’t allowed a goal in four games, Maranacook knew scoring would be tough.

So the Black Bears packed in their defense and tried to take away as many opportunities as possible, knowing they wouldn’t get many themselves.

The game plan worked. Maranacook tied Camden Hills 0-0 in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B game Friday.

“I think we are pretty happy we held together defensively and didn’t give up any goals,” Maranacook midfielder Tyler DeAngelis said. “Yeah, it hurt us not having our top goal scorer, but we dug deep.”

Camden Hills (4-0-1) has outscored opponents, 28-0.

Maranacook (5-0-1) is no slouch offensively, with 24 goals, but was limited without Duplissie, out with a knee injury.

The Windjammers managed seven shots, most from the perimeter.
