Mitchell leads Black Bears to field hockey win, 7-0
Jocelyn Mitchell scored a hat trick to lead the University of Maine field hockey team to a 5-0 halftime lead on its way to a 7-0 rout of Bryant University on Friday in Orono.
Alexa Binnendijk, Courtney Veinotte, Marie Dineen and Cassandra Mendonca also scored for the Black Bears (5-2).
Brittany Fleck made four saves to record her second career shutout.
FOOTBALL: Former University of Florida broadcaster Steve Babik was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for child pornography.
A federal judge in Gainesville sentenced Babik to 151 months in prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release. He pleaded guilty in April to one count of receipt and distribution of child pornography.
HOCKEY
QMJHL: Joel Champagne scored three times, and Jonathan Audy-Marchessault added two goals and five assists for the Quebec Remparts in a 12-3 home win over the Lewiston Maineiacs.
Antoine Houde-Caron led Lewiston with a goal and two assists. Matthew Bissonnette and Olivier Dame-Malka scored a goal apiece.
PREP SCHOOLS
BOYS’ SOCCER: Jamal Borden broke a 2-2 tie in the second half and also had two assists to help Hyde take a 4-2 win over Carrabassett Valley Academy at Bath.
Nabil Eshraghian, Wes Freston and Wilson MacMillan also scored for the Phoenix.
• Ian McFarland broke a 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute, giving Berwick Academy a 2-1 win over the Bowdoin College junior varsity at Brunswick.
Colin Fong gave Bowdoin a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute, but Chirs Wild converted a penalty kick in the 55th minute to draw the Bulldogs even.
