AUGUSTA — Maine motor vehicle records show independent gubernatorial candidate Kevin Scott has dozens of driving convictions and he has had his license suspended 21 times.

The Bureau of Motor Vehicle records list convictions dating to 1989. Violations include speeding, operating after suspension, failure to show proof of insurance, failure to show valid inspection sticker and others. Suspensions are for repeat violations. The latest conviction was in April 2010 for speeding 50 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Scott is one of three independents in a five-way race for governor. The secretary of state’s office, which oversees motor vehicle laws, says the other candidates have fairly typical records for Maine drivers.

Scott says most of the violations are old and he’s overcome his bad habits.
