BANGOR — A jury in Bangor has heard opening statements this morning in the double murder trial of Rory Holland.

Holland, 56, of Biddeford, is on trial for the shooting deaths of 21-year-old Derek Greene, and his younger brother, 19-year-old Gage Greene. Holland shot the brothers to death after a confrontation outside his house in the early morning of June 30, 2009.

Holland’s lawyers say he shot the men in self-defense, and has had a history of run-ins with them.

State prosecutors will ask the jury to convict Holland of knowing and intentional murder, which is punishable by a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of life in prison.

Relatives and friends of the Greene brothers wiped away tears during the opening statements this morning at the Penobscot Judicial Center. The trial was moved to Bangor from York County at the request of Holland’s attorneys, who argued that he could not get a fair trial in southern Maine.
