Mapping and communications firm DeLorme announced it has partnered with Maine resident and champion snowboarder Seth Wescott to promote the company’s latest handheld GPS, the PN-60w.
The GPS, which was released earlier this year, won Popular Mechanics’ Breakthrough Award in October. The award was given to a handful of products and innovators that “moved society forward in 2010.”
DeLorme’s PN-60w communicates wirelessly with a satellite messaging unit from SPOT, a California company. The devices can be used to type and send text messages and update Facebook and Twitter via satellite instead of less-reliable cellular signals.
Wescott won gold medals in snowboarding at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
A DeLorme media release said Wescott will appear with DeLorme at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show and will appear in upcoming DeLorme print advertisements.
Wescott co-owns The Rack, a restaurant near Sugarloaf Mountain Resort in Carrabassett Valley.
