Huskies hold off Monks for win in women’s soccer

Tara Moore and Chelsea Norton each had a goal as the University of Southern Maine took a 2-0 lead and held off St. Joseph’s for a 2-1 victory Wednesday night in a college women’s soccer game at Portland.

Samantha Peters assisted on the first goal for the Huskies (5-13) at 33:12, and Bridget FitzGerald and Heidi DeHaan got assists on the second goal at 78:08.

The Monks (7-9-1) closed the gap when Mikayla Call set up Jessica Capozzi at 88:04.

Kara Webber scored with 1:40 remaining to give Eastern Nazarene (6-9-2, 4-8-1 Commonwealth Coast) a 2-1 victory over the University of New England (11-6, 8-5) at Quincy, Mass.

The Nor’easters took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on Katie Caron’s eighth goal of the season.

MEN’S SOCCER: Eastern Nazarene (6-11, 4-9 Commonwealth Coast) built a 3-0 lead and held off the University of New England (3-9-5, 1-8-4) for a 3-2 win at Quincy, Mass.

Matt Christie scored in the 72nd minute and Kiel Hiller scored with 30 seconds left for the Nor’easters.

HOCKEY

QMJHL: The Lewiston Maineiacs scored four consecutive goals over the second and third periods in a 4-2 win over the Rimouski Oceanic at Rimouski, Quebec.

Stefan Fournier and Etienne Brodeur scored in the second period. Samuel Hanley and Oliver Dame-Malka added third-period goals.

Nicholas Champion made 21 saves for the Maineiacs.

TENNIS

WTA CHAMPIONSHIP: Samantha Stosur upset top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 in a group-stage match at Doha, Qatar.

BANK AUSTRIA TROPHY: Defending champion Jurgen Melzer and Marin Cilic reached the quarterfinals at Vienna.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Caite Zeliff and Annie Palmer scored for Proctor Academy in a 2-0 win over Berwick Academy (0-11-1) at South Berwick. Eliza Hazen made eight saves for Berwick.

BOYS’ SOCCER: Chris Wild had three goals and two assists to lead Berwick Academy (11-1, 10-0 Eastern Independent League) to a 7-1 win over Landmark School (1-10, 1-9) at Pride’s Crossing, Mass.

Ethan Ford had four goals to lead Kents Hill (9-2) to a 5-2 win over Hyde School (5-6-2) at Bath.

Jamaal Bordin and Nabil Eshraghian scored for the Phoenix.

FIELD HOCKEY: Haley Grimmer scored with 2:09 left to help Hebron Academy (3-4-1) to a 2-2 tie against Tilton Academy (5-2-3) at Tilton, N.H.

OTHER NEWS: A Notre Dame student died after a tower used to videotape football practice toppled over at South Bend, Ind. The school said the 21-year-old man was filming practice when the accident occurred. Notre Dame will not identify the student until family members are notified of his death. … Tavoris Cloud will defend his IBF light heavyweight championship Dec. 17 at American Airlines Arena in Miami against Fulgencio Zuniga.
