PORTLAND – Angus King, Maine’s most recent independent governor, has endorsed independent Eliot Cutler today, Cutler’s campaign announced.

The endorsement took place at 1 p.m. at Cutler’s Portland headquarters. Cutler, who was campaigning in Hancock and Waldo counties this afternoon, joined the news conference by phone.

King served as governor from 1995 to 2003.

Cutler is in a five-way race for governor, competing against Democrat Libby Mitchell, Republican Paul LePage, and fellow independents Shawn Moody and Kevin Scott.
