ORONO — Megan Fortier’s goal on the third set of overtime penalty corners lifted North Yarmouth Academy to the Class C state field hockey championship with a 2-1 victory over Foxcroft Academy this afternoon.

The teams had played through scoreless regulation, then two scoreless overtime periods, before entering penalty corners.

NYA scored on the second set of corners, as Kylie Dalbec swept in a pass from Katie Millette, but the Ponies came back to score on their corner. Tia Tondreau knocked in a sprawling rebound to tie it and send the game to the third set of corners.

On NYA’s third set, Millett inserted the ball to Frances Leslie, who passed to Dalbec on the right. She got the ball back to Fortier on the left and her shot found the far left corner.

NYA’s defense held off the Ponies on their final corner, to give the Panthers their second state championship in three years.

NYA finished 17-1 while Foxcroft Academy finished 11-6-1.
