MEDFORD, Mass. – Tamara Brown scored from Melissa Burke in the 21st minute as Tufts handed Bowdoin its first field hockey loss of the season, winning 1-0 Friday in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game.

The Polar Bears, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III, and the fifth-ranked Jumbos both finished the regular season 13-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference, with Tufts clinching the top seed for the playoffs.

Emily Neilson stopped four shots for Bowdoin.

 

BATES 2, COLBY 1: Sema Kazarian got the tying goal in the 43rd minute and scored the winner just over four minutes later to lift the Bobcats (5-9, 2-7 NESCAC) over the Mules (6-8, 1-8) at Lewiston.

Colby took the lead in the fifth minute on a goal by Heather Quadir, her team-high fifth of the season.

Katie McEnroe had 13 saves for Bates and Liz Fontaine stopped seven shots for the Mules.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

COLBY 4, BATES 3: Marissa Simmons scored on an assist from Kate Pistel in the second overtime to lift the Mules (5-6-3, 1-5-3 NESCAC) over the Bobcats (6-7-1, 2-6-1) at Waterville.

Simmons and Samantha Merriweather each had two goals as the Mules rallied from a 3-0 halftime deficit.

Jaimie Cappucci and Tina Tobin scored for the Bobcats, who also got an own goal.

TUFTS 1, BOWDOIN 0: Jamie Love-Nichols scored at 3:49 of the second half as the Jumbos (8-2-3, 6-1-2 NESCAC) edged the Polar Bears (6-6-2, 3-5-1) at Somerville, Mass.

Phoebe Hanley made two saves for Tufts, which wrapped up the top seed in the conference. Kat Flaherty made three saves for Bowdoin, which finished seventh.

MEN’S SOCCER

BOWDOIN 1, TUFTS 0: Nick Powell’s goal on an assist by Eddie Jones at 9:30 of the second half gave the Polar Bears (11-2-6, 6-1-2 NESCAC) a victory over the Jumbos (5-7-2, 3-4-2) at Somerville, Mass.

It was the 10th straight win for the Polar Bears, who clinched the top seed in the conference tournament.

COLBY 3, BATES 2: Nate Tolman scored on a breakaway in the eighth minute of overtime to lift the Mules (7-6-1, 4-5 NESCAC) over the Bobcats (5-8-1, 2-6-1) at Lewiston.

Peter Randall and Nick Aubin scored to help Colby take a 2-1 lead.

Patrick Jackson scored twice for Bates, including the tying goal with less than 20 minutes remaining.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

PRESEASON TOP 25: Connecticut was a near-unanimous pick atop the AP poll, receiving 39 of 40 first-place votes from a national media panel. It’s the eighth time in school history UConn has held the top preseason ranking.

Baylor received the other first-place vote and was second, with Stanford, Tennessee and Xavier rounding out the first five.

FOOTBALL

MICHIGAN STATE: Defensive back Chris L. Rucker traveled with the team to Iowa for today’s game against the 18th-ranked Hawkeyes, but the school hasn’t announced whether he will play.

Rucker was reinstated to the team Thursday after missing two games and serving eight days in jail for a probation violation following what was initially a drunken driving charge. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving.
