ORONO — Jessie Skillings scored two goals in the first half to lead Skowhegan to its ninth Class A state field hockey championship in 10 years Saturday afternoon as the Indians defeated Cheverus 3-0.

Skowhegan was defeated in the championship game a year ago, ending an eight-year reign, but came back with an undefeated 18-0 season in which the Indians gave up only three goals and scored 94.

Skillings scored on a penalty stroke just 8:02 into the game, beating Cheverus goalie Cindy Clark low to the stick side.

She scored off a penalty corner with just 8:08 left in the first half, getting the rebound of a Sarah Finnemore drive and flicking a reverse hit into the net.

Haley Holt had the only goal of the second half, tipping in a Finnemore drive off another penalty corner with 23:22 remaining.

Cheverus, making its first appearance in a state championship game, finished 13-5.
