The South Portland Middle School Red Riots completed their first Southern Maine Youth Football League season Sunday by splitting a doubleheader against York. With its 24-14 victory at York, the Red Riots varsity captured the “Silver” consolation playoff tournament and finished with a 7-3 record. The varsity defeated Wells, 40-28, in a first round playoff game. The JV also finished 7-3, including the loss to York.

The varsity, by virtue of finishing in 10th place in the 20-team SMYL, did not qualify for the league championship series. The victory in the “Silver” tournament championship game featured an outstanding rushing attack, led by Hayden Owen’s 91 yards on only four carries. Matthew Stearns ran for 92 yards on 15 carries and quarterback Ryan Ruhlin gained 67 yards on the ground on 7 rushing attempts.
