Top-seeded Cheverus held off No. 5 Scarborough to advance to the Western Class A football final, 21-14, today in Portland.

Cheverus (10-0) will host No. 3 Deering (8-2) next Saturday in Portland.

Evan Jendrasko rushed for 132 yards on 24 carries for Cheverus, but his biggest contribution may have been a fumble-causing sack in the final minute of the third quarter with the score tied at 14 and Scarborough deep in Cheverus territory.

The Stags recovered the fumble and drove for the go-ahead touchdown two plays after an 8-yard pass from Peter Gwilym to tight end Jack Bushey on 4th-and-7 at the Scarborough 15.

Trailing 21-14, Scarborough drove inside the Cheverus 20 before being stopped for no gain on consecutive plays, needing less than a yard for a first down. Cheverus retained possession for the final five minutes to return to the regional final for the second straight year.

Scarborough, which went 1-7 a year ago, finished 8-2.
