BANGOR — Soldiers returning and departing from Bangor International Airport often get welcomed by the Maine Troop Greeters group. This time, the country’s Homeland Security secretary and a group of U.S. senators joined the well-wishers.

A spokesman for Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins says the group was on its way to Halifax, Nova Scotia, for a security conference when their flight was diverted to Bangor on Friday night.

Collins, who lives in Bangor, joined the group – Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz.; Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H.; Barbara Mikulski, D-Md.; Jeff Sessions, R-Ala.; Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; and Mark Udall, D-Colo.

The group greeted two flights of troops returning from overseas.
