AUGUSTA — Utility regulators say FairPoint Communications will begin paying additional rebates to customers in Maine next month because of the company’s poor customer service.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission voted Tuesday to reject FairPoint’s request to reduce the rebates it must pay for not meeting customer service benchmarks between Aug. 1, 2009, and July 30, 2010. As a result, FairPoint will pay $9.1 million in bill credits over 12 months starting in December.

The rebates come on top of an additional $8 million in rebates that FairPoint began paying last March for poor service in 2009.

North Carolina-based FairPoint is going through reorganization after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2009.
