EWING, N.J. – Kathleen Notos scored three goals to lead The College of New Jersey to a 4-0 win Wednesday over the University of New England in the opening round of the NCAA Division III field hockey tournament.

Notos tipped in a shot 6:46 into the first half for the opening goal, then redirected a cross about 12 minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Notos scored the final goal by putting a rebound in the 52nd minute. Alex Okuniewicz also scored for the Lions (16-4).

Michelle Oswald had a shot hit the post with two minutes left in the first half for the Nor’easters (13-7). Ayla Nelson made six saves for UNE.

FOOTBALL

UMAINE: Orono police say freshman running back David Hood is accused of punching two women after exchanging words at a party in Orono.

Orono Police Sgt. Josh Ewing said Hood of Galloway, N.J., was charged Tuesday with two counts of assault after an investigation into the weekend incident. A UMaine spokesman said Hood, 18, has been suspended from the team and could face further sanctions under the student conduct code.

HUSSON: Sean Murphy, a Marshwood graduate, was named coach.

Murphy, who served as assistant head coach this season, inherits a struggling program that was coached by Niles Nelson for the past two seasons. The Eagles were outscored 430-191 in 10 games and finished 1-9, 1-6 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference.

Murphy also coached at Dickinson, Bowdoin and Plymouth State.
