ORONO – McAuley High standout Rebecca Knight was one of three girls’ basketball players to sign a letter of intent to attend the University of Maine next season.

Knight, a 5-foot-11 guard from Portland, was a Maine Sunday Telegram All-State selection. She averaged 10.4 points and 7.4 rebounds last season and helped the Lions to the Western Class A semifinals.

“I feel very comfortable knowing that we got the top Maine player in this year’s class. She is a combo guard lefty shooter and will play both the No. 1 and No. 2 position for us,” Maine Coach Cindy Blodgett said in a statement.

The two other players are Kelsey Mattice, a 5-5 guard from Cicero, N.Y.; and Danielle Walczak, a 6-1 forward from Durham, N.H.

Knight and Walczak are AAU teammates on the New England Crusaders.

“The 2011 class is going to fill multiple needs for us and is one of our most talented,” Blodgett said. “They are a hard-working group, and they all love the game.”
