WHO: Deering (8-2) vs. Cheverus (10-0)

WHEN: 12:30 p.m. today

WHERE: Cheverus’ Boulos Stadium, Portland

TO GET HERE: Deering beat Thornton Academy 56-18 and Bonny Eagle, 28-6. Cheverus beat Windham 34-27 and Scarborough, 21-14

FOR CHEVERUS: The Stags like to control the ball, run time off the clock and limit the opponent’s chances. That’s key against an explosive team like Deering. Cheverus runs out of the wing-T and I formations. The team counts on halfback Spencer Cooke, fullback Evan Jendrasko and quarterback Peter Gwilym to do the bulk of the running. Gwilym has been successful throwing to Jack Bushey, Liam Fitzpatrick and Cooke, out of the backfield.

FOR DEERING: The Rams are the most wide-open offensive team in the state with their no-huddle, spread offense. Quarterback Jamie Ross will throw 20 to 25 times a game. His top targets are receivers John Hardy and Renaldo Lowry. Ross is the team’s top rusher, but the return of halfback Trey Thomes has given balance to the ground game.

OF NOTE: The winner will play Bangor, which beat Lewiston 28-25 in the Eastern Class A final Friday night.
