SOUTH PORTLAND — A squirrel is being blamed for knocking out power to 833 customers in South Portland this morning.

The squirrel made contact with equipment on a pole on Highland Avenue at about 10 a.m., shorting out the system for approximately an hour, said Central Maine Power Co spokeswoman Gail Rice.

Rice said the area affected included Anthoine Street and parts of Waterman Drive and Highland Avenue.

Power was restored at 11:04  a.m., she said.
