LEWISTON — A University of Maine graduate from the Lewiston-Auburn area has been appointed by President Barack Obama as ambassador to Gambia.

The Sun Journal says Pamela White is to be sworn in at a ceremony Thursday in Washington. White will become the first University of Maine graduate to be appointed to an ambassadorship, and the second Maine woman to serve as an ambassador.

White is a former Peace Corps volunteer in Africa and also worked with the U.S. Agency for International Development. She has a master’s degree from the School of International Training in Brattleboro, Vt.

The U.S. State Department says that during her service in Mali, White’s work led to big increases in the numbers of girls in primary school and elected women leaders.
