RUNNING

NCAA: Former Portland High runner Ayalew Taye won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championship Saturday in State College, Pa.

Taye, now a senior at Georgetown University, covered the 10-kilometer course in 30 minutes, 5 seconds to beat a pair of Penn State runners by one and two seconds. The victory over a field of 193 qualifies Taye — who won the Maine resident category of the 2007 Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race — for the NCAA Division I National Championships next Monday in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Sintayehu Taye, Ayalew’s brother, a junior at the University of Virginia, placed 47th at the Southeast Regional meet Saturday in Louisville, Ky. Both Virginia and Georgetown received at-large berths in the national championship meet hosted by Indiana State.
