PORTLAND — Joanne Blanchfield Barron, 82, formerly of Cape Elizabeth, died Monday, Nov. 15, at Saint Joseph’s Manor, where she was a resident for the past several years.

Born in Holyoke, Mass. on Aug. 14, 1928, she was the daughter of Thomas and Edith Leavitt, and graduated in 1946 from Sacred Heart High School in Weymouth, Mass.

On Sept. 10, 1955, she married Martin A. Barron in North Quincy, Mass. They lived in Boston while he attended medical school. While he served with the Army Medical Corps they lived in Germany until they returned home, and settled in Portland, where he started a 32-year pediatric practice.

A longtime homemaker, she enjoyed spending summers at the family cottage on Long Island.

She was a communicant of St. Bartholomew’s Church, where she volunteered for many years.

She was known by many at Shaw’s Millcreek as the “Peppermint Patty lady.”

Her brothers, John and Tom Leavitt, and her beloved husband, Martin A. Barron, predeceased her.

Survivors include three children, daughter, Meredith Schwarz and her husband Mark of Scarborough, and two sons, Martin Barron and his wife Carlene of South Portland, and William Barron and his wife Delphine of Huntington Bay, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m Thursday, Nov. 18 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at St. Bartholomew’s Church, 8 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth.
