WESTBROOK — Westbrook police announced today that they are actively investigating fight clubs where mixed martial arts-style fights are being organized and announced on Facebook.
Two young men have been charged by police with unlawful prize fighting as a result, and more people could face charges, according to Lt. Mike Nugent, who is heading up the investigation.
The first fight, which was reported Nov. 8, took place in plain view on Cumberland Street. A second fight, on Nov. 16, involved two teenagers, who arranged the fight on Facebook, but police say that was more of a grudge match than an organized fight.
Nugent said police consider street fighting to be a public safety matter and are warning organizers that the fights, which involve kicking, punching and wrestling, will not be tolerated.
