Rep. Emily Cain, D-Orono, was chosen by Democrats today to serve as minority leader for the new legislative session.

Cain, who most recently served as House chairwoman of the Appropriations Committee, said her experience working with Republicans would make her a good choice to be the Democratic leader.

“I want to be your minority leader because the stakes are high,” she said.

Cain defeated Rep. Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham, and Rep. Cynthia Dill, D-Cape Elizabeth, in the race for minority leader.

Republicans control the House 78-72-1. The Democrats are now considering who will serve as minority whip.
