PORTLAND — Portland police are searching for a man who tried to rob the Dollar Store on St. John Street Wednesday.

A clerk told police that at about 9:30 p.m. a man went through the checkout line like he was buying a soda, but when the clerk opened the register, he reached over and tried to grab cash.

The clerk screamed and tried to slam shut the drawer. The robber responded by hitting her in the face, then fled, police said. She did not require medical attention.

The suspect is described as white, 5-foot-8, about 200 pounds, in his late 20s or early 30s and wearing a gray sweatshirt with the hood covering his head.
