NOBLEBORO — A veteran state trooper has been arrested and charged with unlawful sexual contact with a child and tampering with a witness.

Steve McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine State Police, confirmed Monday night that Gregory Vrooman, a 24-year veteran of the force, who lives in Nobleboro, was arrested at his home last Wednesday by officers from the Attorney General’s Office.

Vrooman was taken to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset where he was later released after making bail.

McCausland said Vrooman has been placed on administrative leave pending the resolution of the charges that have been filed against him.

District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau, who will prosecute the case, said if convicted Vrooman could face up to five years in jail.

Rushlau refused to comment further on the allegations against the trooper.
