SCARBOROUGH — A surfer had to be rescued from the Scarborough River this morning after he became fatigued and ended up clinging to a buoy.

Deputy Fire Chief Wes Merritt said town firefighters in a 21-foot Boston Whaler reached the surfer within a matter of minutes after his surfing buddy notified authorities around 11 a.m. that his friend was in trouble.

The two men had been surfing for about two hours off Ferry Beach near the Prouts Neck Yacht Club when one of the men – his name was not available – couldn’t make it back to shore. Merritt said it was windy and the waves were large.

If he had not been wearing a wetsuit, Merritt said the surfer might have been hospitalized. He was checked out by emergency medical technicians and seemed fine.
