YARMOUTH — Herbert I. Hopkins Jr. of North Yarmouth is the new director of business services for the Yarmouth School Department.

He replaces Carol Kinney, who is retiring after serving 19 years as the School Department’s business director.

Most recently, Hopkins was business manager for the Portland Public Schools. During his 2 1/2 years there, Portland’s school budget went from a $2 million deficit to last year’s $1.5 million surplus. That figure includes the $2.5 million curtailment, Hopkins said.

“I am leaving Portland in a good place financially,” he said. “The timing is right and I am excited to be in Yarmouth.”

Hopkins served in the U.S. Navy and held finance positions at Central Maine Power Co. He was the business manager for the Brunswick School Department and the director of business operations at the Scarborough School Department for seven years. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Husson College.

“I’ve always had an attraction to Yarmouth,” he said. “I know a lot of the people, it is a great place to work and has a wonderful reputation. It feels like a natural fit for me.”

Superintendent of Schools Judy Paolucci said she and a search team comprised of the town finance director, School Committee members, high school Principal Ted Hall, maintenance Director Bruce Bickford and town staff reviewed more than 20 applications. They interviewed six finalists before unanimously recommending Hopkins to the School Committee.

“(Hopkins) has a lot of experience in operations, supervising, maintenance and accounting,” Paolucci said. “He has a great knowledge base and we are very excited to have him work with us.”

Kinney will work with Hopkins through the end of December to help with the transition, Paolucci said.

Hopkins started his new position Monday, Nov. 29.

David Ray, chairman of the School Committee, said the committee was very pleased to have Hopkins join the district.

“There were many good candidates for the position, but (Hopkins) had the necessary background to hit the ground running,” Ray said. “He is familiar with the state’s systems and with the way area schools operate. We are looking forward to working with him.”
