AUGUSTA, — A recount of votes cast in an Election Day referendum on Maine’s Oxford County casino is set to begin.

The recount that is beginning Thursday was requested after voters on Nov. 2 approved the statewide ballot question by 4,601 votes. According to unofficial tallies, the margin is less than 1 percent of more than 564,000 votes cast.

The referendum result being challenged would allow Black Bear Entertainment to build a $165 million resort casino in Oxford County featuring slot machines and table games.

The recount of ballots cast across the state is expected to take weeks. It gets under way at state police headquarters in Augusta.
