Peter Gwilym of Cheverus has been named Maine’s Gatorade high school football player of the year. Gwilym, a quarterback and safety, led the Stags to a 12-0 season and the Class A state championship.

Gwilym rarely came off the field, as he also returned punts and kickoffs. He passed for 763 yards and nine touchdowns, with just two interceptions in 88 attempts. He also rushed for 705 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Gwilym, who was named player of the year in the SMAA, had five interceptions and 81 unassisted tackles.

In a 35-34 victory over Deering in the Western Class A final, Gwilym returned an interception 106 yards for a touchdown.

Gwilym is the school’s second Gatorade football player of the year, joining Kevin Smith, who was named the recipient in 1987.
