Christmas Prelude turns 29 this year, and one of its selling points, officials say, is its consistency.

“People come here year after year because it doesn’t change,” said Jim Fitzgerald, interim executive director of the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce.

The two-weekend event in Kennebunkport and surrounding towns was well under way Saturday. At least one tree had been lit, potential purchasers were perusing the array of items at numerous craft fairs, and groups were caroling.

Kennebunk’s Lower Village’s tree lighting and caroling was scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, and the evening included a candlelight stroll to the Franciscan Monastery for more caroling and roasting chestnuts over an open fire.

At 2 p.m. today, Santa arrives by lobster boat at the Landing Restaurant.

Next weekend, Prelude includes the Fire & Ice Bar at the Nonantum from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. A portion of the proceeds from the ice bar will be donated to the WinterKids program.

Musical entertainment is featured day and night.
