PORTLAND — The King Middle School librarian is one of 10 librarians to receive national recognition from the Carnegie Corp., The New York Times and the American Library Association.

Kelley McDaniel, who was selected from a pool of more than 1,400 nominees, will travel Thursday to New York, where she will receive an “I Love My Librarian” award and a $5,000 prize.

According to a press release, McDaniel has worked at King for 10 years, creating innovative programs that kindle a love of reading. Some of those programs include author teas, read-a-thons, “Thanks-A-Latte Days” and Harry Potter sleep-overs.

McDaniel is also credited with raising more than $25,000 in grants since 1999 for library-related projects, and has given conference workshops and presentations, including the 2010 International Reading Association Annual Convention.

Librarians working in public, school, college, community college and university libraries were eligible for the award.

King Principal Michael McCarthy said McDaniel, who also received the Maine Association of School Libraries’ 2005 Walter J. Taranko Library Media Specialist of the Year award, is a valuable resource at the school.

“She tirelessly searches for resources to enhance learning expeditions,” he said in a press release. “She has created a school library which is not only a place to find and read books, but also a place to eat, sleep and dance with them.”
