PORTLAND — Jenny Holzer, a conceptual artist, came to Portland on Tuesday to cast the words of Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska in bright white lights on the brick wall of the Portland Museum of Art facing Congress Square.

Holzer has borrowed Szymborska’s verse for many years, using her words to express outrage.

The artist was in town to deliver the museum’s Nelson Social Justice Fund lecture to a crowd of 650 at the nearby Holiday Inn by the Bay.

The fund honors artists whose commitment to social justice is manifested in their work. Holzer lives in New York; Portland is among the smallest cities where she has hosted a site-specific video installation.
