BRUNSWICK – Kyle Shearer-Hardy scored two goals to lead the Bowdoin men’s hockey team to a 3-2 win over Colby on Friday night at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The Polar Bears, ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division III poll, improved to 5-1, 4-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while the Mules fell to 2-4-1, 1-3-1. The Polar Bears lead the all-time series, 100-86-8.

Brendan Reich set up Shearer-Hardy for a slap shot from above the circle to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead 2:20 into the first period. Shearer-Hardy then made it 2-0 at 9:25 with the Polar Bears on the power play.

Mike Doherty pulled Colby within 2-1, scoring on a wrist shot at 13:49 of the second, but the Polar Bears scored again on a power play midway through the third when a shot from above the left circle by Kyle Lockwood deflected off Bowdoin’s Harry Matheson and in at 10:34 to make it 3-1.

The Mules’ final goal came on a slap shot from the point by Tommy Kader at 13:09.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 3, COLBY 1: Kayte Holtz and Madeleine Lane scored first-period goals and the Polar Bears (5-2, 4-2 NESCAC) held off the Mules (2-5, 1-5) at Brunswick.

Samantha Slotnick got Colby on the board with 7:47 left in the second, but Shelagh Merrill scored for Bowdoin three minutes later.

Kendra Sweet had two assists for the Polar Bears, and Tara Connolly made 15 saves.

MAINE 2, UNION 2: Myriam Crousette scored with 4:13 remaining in regulation to help the Black Bears (7-7-4) tie the Dutchmen (1-13-3) at Orono.

Maine goalie Candice Currier made a kick save with 1:09 left in overtime to preserve the tie.

Dawn Sullivan scored Maine’s first goal on a power play.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

PENN 69, MAINE 48: Alyssa Baron and Erin Power each scored 16 points to lead the Quakers (3-4) past the Black Bears (1-7) at Philadelphia.

Jess Knapp added eight points and 12 rebounds for Penn, which opened a 36-15 halftime lead.

Amber Smith scored 11 for Maine.

(15) MICHIGAN STATE 62, W. MICHIGAN 50: Taylor Alton scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half to help Michigan State (9-1) beat Western Michigan (2-8) at Kalamazoo, Mich.

(22) MARYLAND 71, UMBC 45: Tianna Hawkins scored 16 points and Maryland (9-1) coasted past Maryland-Baltimore County (4-6) at College Park, Md.

(23) WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY 74, SE MISSOURI 40: Celeste Hoewisch scored 16 points to lead Wisconsin-Green Bay (9-0) past visiting Southeast Missouri (4-5).
