Abbey Leonardi of Kennebunk High placed 16th at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships on a warm Saturday morning at Balboa Park in San Diego.
A junior competing at the national event for the second year in a row, Leonardi covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 56 seconds. Aisling Cuffe, the New York state champion, won the race in 16:52.
As the second-fastest qualifier from the Northeast Region, Leonardi was among the leaders early in the race. She was fourth after 800 meters before dropping out of the top 10 by the end of the second mile.
Last year Leonardi placed 22nd. The top 15 finishers receive all-American designation by Foot Locker.
