NEW YORK – Mark Madoff, a son of imprisoned financier Bernard Madoff, was found hanging from a dog leash in his New York City apartment Saturday, on the two-year anniversary of his father’s arrest for stealing $65 billion from investors.

An autopsy by the city medical examiner’s office is scheduled for today.

Mark Madoff, 46, and his older brother, Andrew, who notified authorities their father had confessed to them the day before he was arrested on Dec. 11, 2008, have said they were unaware of his crimes. But they have remained under investigation and been named in multiple civil lawsuits accusing them of profiting from the scheme.

Bernard Madoff, now 72, was sentenced to 150 years in prison last year for the biggest Ponzi scheme in history, which destroyed the life savings of some 2,300 people.

Mark and Andrew Madoff, along with an uncle, Peter Madoff, held high-level positions in Bernard’s investment firm.

Madoff was reportedly found by his father-in law, who was sent to the apartment after Madoff’s wife, Stephanie, received despondent e-mails from her husband, according to AP reports. Inside the apartment was his 2-year old son, asleep in another room, the AP reported.

Stephanie Madoff was in Florida, vacationing with the couple’s 4-year-old daughter. Earlier this year she filed to change her last name and that of her children to Morgan, according to news reports.
