SOUTH PORTLAND — A new Indian restaurant opened late last week at 220 Gorham Road in South Portland, near the Olive Garden restaurant.
Aroma, Authentic India Cuisine, sells food that is traditionally from South India and is made from unique spices and curries, said part-owner Jay Yeety.
The restaurant also sells what Yeety calls Indian “fast-food items,” like rice crepes, rice cakes and lentil doughnuts.
“You can’t find this anywhere in Maine, only in New York and California,” he said.
Yeety, who lives in Scarborough, said that until now the area lacked authentic and affordable Indian food.
Yeety expects Aroma to be popular with Indian-descent employees of local firms like Wright Express, Unum and National Semiconductor.
Aroma has seating for 44 diners and is open for lunch and dinner. Combo meals cost less than $7, and the restaurant has a buffet. The other partners of Aroma are Jagdish Juttu and Param Dasana.
