The Maine House and Senate will meet for a one-day session today to vote on new rules for the 125th Legislature.

The biggest change is a compromise brokered Wednesday night to combine the Labor Committee and the Business, Research and Economic Development Committee into one group. The new committee would be called the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee.

Majority Republicans had proposed the elimination of the Labor Committee, but Democrats and organized labor pushed back against the plan. After hours of negotiations, a 10-member bipartisan panel agreed Wednesday to a compromise that creates the new committee and parcels out some topic areas to other committees.

More than a dozen firefighters are at the State House today to ensure that the compromise is adopted by the full Legislature.
