BIDDEFORD — A Biddeford woman is due in court today on charges she set a fire that destroyed an apartment building in May 2009.
Police say they were investigating an attempted arson at 358 Main St. Thursday where someone had stuffed newspapers under asbestos siding and tried to ignite it, though the fire-retardant siding burned out before igniting the building.
The investigation led them to interview one of the residents of the building, Edna Godin, 43, on Friday. Godin confessed to starting Thursday’s fire, police said, and also admitted to starting a 2009 fire at 8 Kossuth St. where she also lived.
The fire destroyed the multi-family building, displacing several people including Godin and her family members.
Godin was arrested Friday and taken to York County Jail where she was held on $5,000 bail pending her appearance in Biddeford District Court today at 1 p.m.
