MATINICUS — A Maine lobsterman charged with beating a competitor over a fishing dispute and stealing his gun on the island of Matinicus is going to spend two years in prison.
Twenty-nine-year-old Joshua Anthony was sentenced Monday in Rockland.
Anthony and 39-year-old Jason Luce have pleaded guilty to a variety of charges stemming from a May 1 assault on Matinicus. Luce is due to be sentenced later this month.
The Bangor Daily News says the victim claims the episode began after two of the victim’s friends set fishing gear off the island.
Tensions over fishing off Matinicus were highlighted after a lobsterman was wounded during a shooting in the summer of 2009. The feuds also have led to the cutting of trap lines and vandalizing boats.
