Veteran political consultant Dennis Bailey said tonight that he is behind the “Cutler Files” website.

In a posting on his blog, Savvyspin.com, Bailey wrote that the idea behind the site, which criticized independent candidate Eliot Cutler, was “to set the record straight and tell the truth about a candidate for governor who we believed was fudging his record.”

Bailey says another man, who he calls John Doe, did most of the research and he set up the site. He doesn’t identify that man on his blog posting.

Bailey previously had denied involvement.

Cutler, who narrowly lost to Republican Paul LePage, filed a complaint with the state Ethics Commission about the site, which triggered an investigation. This week, the Commission fined one of the creators $200, but declined to disclose his identity.
